Metro Red Line Stations Reopen Sunday After 3-Month Closure

Four Metro Red Line stations that have been closed for nearly three months will reopen this Sunday, Sept. 1.

The Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton, and Glenmont stations will reopen. The stations have been closed since June 1 for construction of a Purple Line mezzanine and other work.

Rehabilitation work was done at the Metro stations while the state transit administration did Purple Line mezzanine construction at Silver Spring.

According to Metro, work on the Purple Line mezzanine will continue at Silver Spring, with scaffolding covering part of the platform there. Silver Spring will continue to be an active Purple Line construction site and scaffolding will remain until 2027. The station will open Sunday despite the work.

Crews built columns over the summer that will support the walkway from the Purple Line station to the Metro platform at Silver Spring, according to Metro.

The Purple Line is scheduled to start operating Dec. 2027.

In about two years during summer 2026, the Medical Center and Bethesda Metro stations will close to connect the Purple Line to the Bethesda rail station, according to Metro.
