Metro will be launching a reduced fare program to help low-income customers later this month.
The program, called “Metro Lift,” begins Tuesday, June 20. Customers enrolled in Metro Lift will receive a 50 percent discount on Metrorail and Metrobus travel.
Residents of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. who are actively participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are eligible to enroll in Metro Lift.
Around 471,000 people in the region receive SNAP benefits, according to a press release about the new program.
WMATA’s Board of Directors approved this program in the fiscal year 2024 budget in order to promote equity and affordability in transportation.
“Our priority is making transportation accessible for all customers. The savings from this program will give our customers opportunities to access jobs with higher wages, travel to medical appointments, and access more of the region,” Randy Clarke, WMATA’s general manager and CEO, said in the press release.
Metro will continue to offer its other reduced fare programs, like U-Pass and Senior SmarTrip. Customers already receiving discounted fares do not need to enroll in Metro Lift and will keep receiving their current fare discount.
Customers can enroll in Metro Lift online beginning June 20 or in-person starting June 26. More information about how to enroll can be found here.
