Some Montgomery County employees will receive bigger paychecks beginning July 1 when the minimum wage is raised here.
Every year since 2017, the minimum wage has increased on July 1 and that will continue through 2022. The amount of the increase depends on how many employees work at a business.
For companies with at least 51 employees, the new minimum wage is $15 an hour. For smaller companies, the minimum wage must be $14 an hour. For establishments with 10 or fewer staff members, the new minimum wage is $13.50.
“I was proud to champion the increase in minimum wage when I was a County council member and pleased to see that it is finally reached $15 per hour for large employers,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in a news release.
“Montgomery County has been at the forefront of minimum wage policies and this increase will not just help those earning minimum wages but will also increase wages for all hourly workers throughout the County. People who work deserve to earn a decent wage. This will help them earn enough to put a roof over their heads, feed their families and not have to choose between putting food on the table and medical visits. A decent wage is the path to more opportunity and improved equity,” Elrich said.
Employees who are 18 years or younger or work fewer than 20 hours per week are exempt from the minimum wage increase.
