Next to hockey, curling is the most popular sport in Canada. In these parts, it’s not quite on the sports radar but there are devoted curlers in the area. Most of them go to the Potomac Curling Club, located just outside Montgomery County in Laurel.
Like many Olympic sports, curling gets much more attention during Olympic years. The Beijing Winter Games started this week so interest has ramped up.
Probably the most important thing to happen to the sport of curling is the U.S. Olympic men’s team winning a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
MyMCM visited some curlers from Montgomery County at the Potomac Curling Club this week to learn more about the sport as people get ready to watch the Olympics.
For those interested in getting an in-person introduction to curling, the Potomac Curling Club will host a “Try Curling” open house on Feb. 12. The club is also hosting “Learn to Curl” events, which are a little more involved, Feb. 14-18. For all events, you must sign up online in advance. Go to www.curldc.org for more information.
