Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Week: Pierce Tewksbury

Pierce Tewksbury already has three years of varsity baseball experience under his belt. Now, the Gettysburg College commit’s senior season is underway and the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons are savoring every last moment.

Tewksbury is this week’s Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Week.

Each week throughout the school year, the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame is partnering with Montgomery Community Media to honor an Athlete of the Week from the county’s more than 40 public and private high schools.

“Being that two-way guy, he’s gonna be involved in every game and every inning,” head coach John Schmidt told MCM. “I can pretty much put him anywhere and he’ll get it done. He’s like a Swiss Army knife.”

Tewksbury is coming off a dominant stretch of games over spring break, which saw the Barons go 3-1. He went 7-for-12 at the plate, driving in five runs, while also picking up a win and a save on the mound.

For this effort, Tewksbury earned top honors in “Studs of the Week” by Xposure Sports, a group that organizes tournaments and spotlights baseball talent in Maryland. Fellow B-CC senior Bobby Burk also made the list.

The Barons are led by a senior class of nine.

“Each of the guys, including [Tewksbury], play multiple roles on the team depending on who’s pitching,” Schmidt said. “They’ve played a ton of games together, so we’ll miss the continuity, absolutely.”

At 4-1, B-C.C. is a consensus top-25 team in the state just a couple weeks into the season. PrepBaseball Report’s weekly rankings have the Barons in fifth, with division rivals Walter Johnson and Walt Whitman in first and fourth, respectively.

The Barons will face both foes next week, an early test of the pecking order in the Class 4A West II division and a chance for B-C.C. to avenge last year’s state playoff loss to Whitman.

“I know what to expect every time I write [Tewksbury’s] name in the lineup card. I know I’m gonna get 100%,” Schmidt said. “He’s gearing up towards playing at the next level and leaving everything on the field. He’s kind of bringing everybody with him.”
