1. Scotland AME Zion Church Rises as Renovations Begin
Four years after floods destroyed the foundation of Scotland AME Zion Church in Potomac, residents of one of Montgomery County’s oldest Black communities gazed upon their uplifted church.
2. Council Questions MCPS Promotion Process
On Thursday, Sept. 28, the Council Committee for Education and Culture met with officials from MCPS and the Board of Education to discuss solutions to the processes that enabled Joel Beidleman to be promoted to Principal of Paint Branch High School despite being under investigation. 3. Students, Families Join Walk to School Day
The annual “Walk and Roll” to School Day was Wednesday. Families and local leaders joined an event Wednesday morning at Brooke Grove Elementary School in Olney.
4. More Than 35 Local Artists Showcase Work in Makers Market
Saturday’s Fall Makers market in downtown Silver Spring showcased unique and handmade products from local artisans and featured live music and outdoor dining options. Tents were set up along Ellsworth Drive between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street for the artisans to display and sell their work.
5. Memory Care Patients Forced to Find New Home in 6 Weeks
The Landing in Silver Spring, an assisted living and memory care facility, will close November 15, forcing about 50 residents to seek new homes in only six weeks. According to an Oct. 2 letter “to our residents and their families,” the facility on New Hampshire Avenue has been sold to Omega Healthcare Investors and Communicare and will undergo a year-long renovation. It will be converted into a skilled nursing facility.
