Montgomery Parks to Host Special Events on Emancipation Day

Montgomery Parks will partner with the Montgomery County Commission on Remembrance and Remission to host activities, demonstrations and guided tours in celebration of Emancipation Day on Nov. 2. Maryland was one of the first states to abolish slavery, on Nov. 1, 1964,  a year ahead of the adoption of the 13th amendment.

To honor the 160th anniversary, there are a number of events that will highlight the history of slavery in Montgomery County:

The Josiah Henson Museum and Park will be free on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in remembrance of the day. Josiah Henson escaped slavery and reached Canada where he established an institute for other freed slaves.

Oakley Cabin has a guided tour and open house for people to learn about the African-Americans who lived and worked there before emancipation.

Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park has free museum admission on Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guided hikes along the Underground Railroad Trail at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Sandy Spring Slave Museum will have guest speakers, free tours and historical exhibits from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Nov 2.
