Bishop Leila Ortiz, who leads the Metro DC Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, doesn’t shy away from saying it’s unusual for a Latina to lead 35,000 Lutherans in about 80 churches in the DC region. “The Holy Spirit is up to something,” she says. Ortiz is the first Latina bishop in the Lutheran church on the mainland United States.
