Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight is expected to announce districtwide actions in response to increased hate incidents in an address Thursday.
On Wednesday, County Executive Marc Elrich said a more deliberate policy is needed.
He said he has not talked with McKnight since MCPS announced the upcoming address and looks forward to having a conversation, “but anything they do is important.”
“We’ve talked before about, you can’t tolerate racist, sexist, homophobic kind of messaging in classrooms, you can’t say this is alright and the school system has got to be unambiguous about that,” Elrich said during a media briefing Wednesday.
According to a release from MCPS on Monday, “The rise of incidents of hate, bias, racism, antisemitism and LGBTQ+ prejudice has grown significantly over recent months.”
“The superintendent will characterize the problem, issue a collective call to action and announce actions the school district will take moving forward.”
