More Than 23,000 Residents Cast Votes During Early Voting Opening Day

Almost 25,000 Montgomery County residents cast their ballot during the first day of early voting on Thursday.

The highest turnout was at the Potomac Community Recreation Center where 2,465 people voted. According to the Montgomery County Board of Elections, 1,365 voters there were registered Democrats, 618 were Republicans and 484 were not affiliated with either party.

These results are unofficial, according to the Board of Elections (BOE), which listed that 23,450 people voted Thursday. Of that tally, 14,416 were registered Democrats, 4,809 were registered Republicans and 4,225 are listed as other.

“This is nothing special. We are happy that they show up,” Gilberto Zelaya, community engagement public relations officer for the BOE, said of the numbers.

“We don’t have a barometer to gauge it with, because 2020 was COVID,” he said of the previous presidential election. During the pandemic, many people didn’t vote in person, he explained.

Coming in second was Germantown Community Recreation Center, which received 2,444 votes from 1,358 registered Democrats, 590 registered Republicans and 496 others.

The Activity Center at Bohrer Park saw the third highest number of voters, with 2,315 total votes cast.

The least number of votes were cast at the White Oak Community Recreation Center.

Early voting continues through Halloween (next Thursday). County residents can cast their votes at any of the 14 early voting locations.
