National Park Service Seeks Input on Glen Echo Park’s Future

The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking input on its plans to upgrade Glen Echo Park.

Glen Echo Park began in 1891 as a National Chautauqua Assembly and became an amusement park in 1911. It closed in 1968 but reopened in 1971 and is owned and operated by the NPS.

It is known for its carousal and arts and cultural program and is home to 13 resident artists and organizations, including two children’s theatres.

To plan for the future, NPS asks community members and park visitors to share what they would like to see there.

According to the Glen Echo Park Management Plan Amendment, the NPA is looking into adding arts programs, ensuring that diverse communities are better served, improving accessibility and incorporating sustainability measures. The plans may include modifying and expanding facilities, adding ADA-compliant entrances and paths and erecting new ones and expanding areas.

A virtual public meeting is set for Dec. 4 from 6:20 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by 45 days in which public comment will be accepted.

“The goal of the amendment is to ensure Glen Echo Park continues to thrive as a premier center for arts, culture, and education. As NPS plans for the future, it is essential to hear from the public to ensure that community needs are met while preserving the park’s rich history,” according to a news release from NPS.

Other proposals include enhancing stormwater management, making it more energy efficient and ensuring the park’s future.

Here is how to join the virtual meeting.
