Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) and the Washington Nationals have teamed up for the fifth consecutive year to reward summer readers with a trip to the ballpark.
MCPL’s Summer Reading Challenge combines books and baseball to keep kids engaged. Children who sign up can choose a free book, while supplies last. Sign-ups will continue throughout the summer, allowing plenty of time to join in.
Participants earn e-badges for every four activities they complete and log online. Thousands of kids have already joined the challenge, earning the “Trailblazer” and “Become a Time Traveler” e-badges.
Activities vary based on the participant’s age but includes a variety of options such as reading for 30 minutes, visiting a museum, and exploring a new park or playground.
Those who earn a second badge will receive a voucher for two tickets to a regular season Nationals game, while supplies last. The Nationals’ Summer Reading website provides details on available games and seats and allows readers to redeem their vouchers.
The Washington Nationals will host Story Times at Nationals Park on Aug. 4 and Sept. 1. On these days, ticket holders get early access to the park, where they can listen to stories read by a Nationals player and participate in other literacy activities.
Starting Aug. 4, kids can earn a “Park Protector” e-badge. The Friends of the Library Montgomery County (FOLMC) will reward them with a voucher for a free book from one of their two bookstore locations, while supplies last.
