Navy’s Win Over Army Caps Off Banner Year for LaFond Siblings

2024 will be a year to remember for the LaFond family.

On August 3, Thea LaFond, born in Dominica but grew up in Silver Spring, won a gold medal in the triple jump at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. It was the first Olympic medal of any kind for the small island country of Dominica.

When Thea’s brother Chreign, a junior defensive end on Navy’s football team, found out about her sister’s achievement during a team practice in Annapolis, the video went viral.

Fast forward to Saturday when Thea’s brother Chreign celebrated with his fellow Midshipmen an upset win over arch rival Army in the 125th playing of the Army-Navy game in Landover. By the winning the game, Navy clinched the coveted Commander-in-Chief’s trophy awarded annually to the winner of the competition between Army, Navy and Air Force.

“I’m just proud of him, he truly loves his sport and the brotherhood at Navy” Thea told MCM. “It’s very clear that he and his teammates have gone through a lot of growth in the last two seasons. They deserve that sweet taste of victory. Mission “BEAT ARMY” was a success.”
