New Biosafety Testing Facility Opens in Rockville

MilliporeSigma, the U.S. and Canada Life Science business of Merck KGaA, a German science and technology company, has opened a new $286 million biosafety testing facility in Rockville this week. Biosafety testing, analytical development and cell banking manufacturing services will be housed in the 250,000 square-foot facility according to Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC).

The company historically known as BioReliance Corporation has 870 employees in Rockville. The expansion will create over 300 jobs over the next several years. The new facility will consolidate labs spread across four buildings in Rockville.

“MilliporeSigma’s expansion is more good news for Montgomery County’s growing life sciences sector,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “This investment of $286 million and the addition of 300 new jobs reinforces what we’ve been working toward—creating a world-class hub for innovation, collaboration and economic growth.”
