The National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) in Bethesda has opened a new food pantry to help families in need. Workers built the new pantry in memory of 12-year old Jackson Payne Buckner. The sixth grader died unexpectedly in February 2023. Jackson was a student at the Bullis School in Potomac.
Staff members, volunteers, residents, and community leaders attended the ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday. Jackson’s Pantry is offering nutritious food and essential supplies to people in the community.
Honoring Jackson Payne Buckner
The Jackson Buckner family along with the Bullis Class of 2029 helped establish the pantry. In addition, family members donated their time to create a space that reflects Jackson’s spirit of generosity and kindness.
“The pantry, much like Jackson, is small yet has a far-reaching impact,” says Tami Jackson Buckner, Jackson’s mother.
“He was a ‘gentleman’s gentleman’—a young man who lived with intention, connection, and a deep commitment to giving back. Our family is profoundly touched to see Jackson’s legacy of compassion and service coming to life in this way. His classmates, friends, and the community united to create a lasting impact that I know Jackson would have treasured,” Buckner added.
At the time of Jackson’s death, family and friends remembered him as a wonderful person who made friends easily. He supported his friends and made them happy. He always showed kindness to others.
Pantry Reflects NCCF’s Mission
NCCF was happy to create Jackson’s Pantry in his memory.
“NCCF’s mission and values center on children and their families,” said Ralph Belk, NCCF’s Executive Director.
“Jackson’s Pantry is the perfect example of how that mission multiplies and grows with each life we touch. A child who loved his community and wanted to help, whose friends, and family carried his personal mission to us after he was gone, and now we have a place where families in need will find not just food, but a reminder that they are cared for and supported,” Belk explained.
Ways To Contribute
NCCF says the community can contribute to Jackson’s Pantry in several ways. People can donate. They also can volunteer to provide support to families in need. Residents also can hold a food drive, and drop off their non-perishable items to the pantry.
