Former Montgomery Blair High School math teacher David Stein officially became president of Montgomery County Education Association this week. He was elected earlier this year.
He follows Jennifer Martin, who began her term in August of 2021.
“David brings a sharp intellect, energetic activism, and deep understanding of the needs of our students and fellow educators to this office after many years teaching math at Blair H.S.,” said Martin in a news release. “We can expect even more from MCEA under David’s leadership, and I know he and this new leadership team will push for the transformational changes MCPS needs so our students and educators can thrive.”
Nikki Woodward is stepping down from her position as vice president and will become vice president of the Maryland State Education Association.
The new vice president is Danillya Wilson. Dustin Jeter was elected secretary, and Kember Kane is treasurer.
MCEA is the union for more 14,000 classroom teachers, school counselors, speech pathologists, media specialists and other educators at Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).
Stein spent three decades as a mathematics teacher and spent three years in the D.C. public schools.
He started at MCPS at Paint Branch High School and then spent 22 years at Blair. Most recently, he taught statistics.
As president, he said MCEA will “focus on improving working conditions for educators, insisting on fair salaries, and ensuring we have the resources we need to provide high-quality education. We need to advocate for policies that promote equity and inclusion within the school system, creating a learning environment where all students can thrive.”
According to MCEA’s website, Stein is a competitive crossword and other puzzle solver and is known as Puzzle Lords at Blair. He continues to walk 10,000 steps daily, which he started doing in 2016.
Wilson has spent more than 11 years as a first-grade teacher at Wheaton Woods Elementary School.
Jeter is an 18-year veteran teacher who has taught high school social studies, Academic Intervention, College Career Readiness and Development, and middle school physical education at James H. Blake High School, Magruder High School, Springbrook High School, and Francis Scott Key Middle School.
He currently teaches AP and NSL Government at James H. Blake High School.
Kane is a kindergarten teacher at Westover Elementary School.
