David Stein, the new Montgomery County Education Association president, is “cautiously optimistic” about the new school year that begins Aug. 26.
Stein, as well as the 14,000 union members he represents, are starting the year with larger class sizes and fewer support staff members but also a new superintendent.
The Takoma Park resident hopes for increased funding for schools and more transparency when the next budget process begins. The union also actively will campaign for its Board of Education candidates: Laura Stewart in District 4, Natalie Zimmerman in District 2 and Rita Montoya, who is running for the at large position.
Stein spent 22 years as a math teacher at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring. He also taught math at Paint Branch High School and in the D.C. public schools. He currently is on leave from teaching during his tenure as the head of the union.
