Werner Drewes (1899-1985) emigrated from Germany to New York in 1930, bringing Bauhaus principles and non-objective art with him. He helped pioneer abstract art in America, exhibiting at the Guggenheim and MOMA. In New York City, he influenced a new generation of artists through his involvement in Hayter’s Atelier 17, the WPA Graphics program, and as a professor at Columbia University.
Later, Drewes taught at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent his final years in Reston, Virginia, creating and sharing abstract art until his death in 1985. Works on Paper celebrates his career, highlighting art from his Bauhaus studies through retirement. The exhibit showcases his exploration of shape, form, and color.
