No fatalities were reported in Montgomery County following severe weather and two likely tornados seen in Poolesville and Gaithersburg on Wednesday.
There were some injuries. Five people were taken to a hospital after a home on Holly Drive in Gaithersburg suffered structural collapse — one person was pinned. All five have been released from the hospital, Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Earl Stoddard said during a briefing Thursday.
The county had nearly 1,000 power outages, said Chief Administrative Officer Rich Madaleno. There were five trees on homes and more work is being done Thursday to take care of downed trees and wires.
“Right now, we are out assessing damage throughout the county and continuing the clean-up,” Madaleno said.
Eight or nine people were displaced, according to Stoddard. He said homes in Gaithersburg were severely impacted, and the county will work with residents on their long-term needs while they are displaced. The Red Cross will also help.
“They will be displaced for some time — those houses are severely damaged,” Stoddard said.
