Olney Man Sentenced to 55 Years for Restaurant Shooting

Michael Boyd. Jr, 40, of Olney, was sentenced Wednesday to 55 years in prison in connection with a shooting outside Sole D’Italia restaurant in the 14300 block of Layhill Road in Silver Spring on July 13, 2023.

He was convicted by a jury on April 4 of two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony. During the incident, four people were shot, including Boyd, and another victim was injured by bullet fragments, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office for Montgomery County.

“We often hear from community members who are sick of this sort of gratuitous violence. The judge echoed those sentiments today. We are thankful for the message this sentence sends, that anyone who engages in this course of conduct will face serious consequences,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

One victim was shot in the left leg, another in her calf and a third in his left hand.

According to court documents, a verbal argument began to the rear of the restaurant and continued in an alley. At that point, a physical fight began. Boyd approached the group from the front of the restaurant, pointing a silver handgun.

Much of the fight and shooting were captured on video.
