Local Athletes Dominated Paris Olympics

In an international competition that featured athletes from 184 countries, Montgomery County athletes stole the spotlight at the Paris Olympics, taking home nine medals, several of them gold.

With the closing ceremony wrapped up and the athletes headed home, here’s a final look at the medals won by MoCo’s finest competitors.

Gold Medals

  • Katie Ledecky (Swimming) – 800 meter freestyle, 1500 meter freestyle
  • Thea LaFond (Track) – Triple Jump
  • Masai Russell (Track) – 100 meter hurdles
  • Quincy Wilson (Track) 4×400 meter relay

Silver Medals 

  • Katie Ledecky (Swimming) – 4×200 meter freestyle relay
  • Erin Gemmell (Swimming) -4×200 meter freestyle relay

Bronze Medals 

  • Katie Ledecky (Swimming) – 400 meter freestyle
  • Helen Maroulis (Freestyle Wrestling) – 57 kg weight class

While the Stone Ridge duo of Katie Ledecky and Erin Gemmell helped uphold Montgomery County’s sterling reputation in the pool, two Bullis School graduates in Masai Russell and Quincy Wilson, as well as a John F. Kennedy High School grad in Thea LaFond (representing Dominica), led the charge in a surprisingly dominant run in track and field.

Helen Maroulis also added to her historic career, bolstering her resumé as perhaps the greatest female American wrestler in history.
