Parents rallied again to demand opt-out options for LGBTQ+ reading material in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).
Ahead of a school board meeting Tuesday, the many protesters — and some counterprotesters — gathered outside of the MCPS Board of Education meeting building, following a rally at the same location three weeks ago.
MCPS implemented measures like limited access on Tuesday due to interest in the meeting.
The rally was organized by Family Rights for Religious Freedom, according to a release.
State law dictates families can only opt out of classes specifically about human growth and sexuality, MCPS Associate Superintendent Niki Hazel previously explained.
MCPS will end its opt-out program starting next school year in reading literacy classes and other curriculums not strictly focused on human growth and sexuality. The school system has chosen six picture books involving LGBTQ+ to be included in literacy classes for elementary schoolers.
