Person in Potomac River Rescued and Transported to Hospital

A hiker who appeared to have slipped on a rock and fell into the Potomac River near Lock 8 was rescued and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday, according to Pete Piringer, spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Piringer described the victim as “an unintentional swimmer” in the river, which had low water levels.

A passerby heard someone in the water yelling and called 911.

The water rescue effort included Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and a U.S. Park helicopter
