Walkability and location are the Friendship Heights community’s most popular strengths, according to a study published by Montgomery Planning earlier this month.
The Friendship Heights Urban Design Study began in June, 2023. It consisted of meetings with neighborhood groups, online questionnaires, open-house events, mass emails, flyers, and partnerships with community organizations.
The goal of the study was to build understanding of participants’ community identity and relationship to Friendship Heights, as well as their sense of pedestrian, transportation and park networks and safety.

Amenities, parks and community friendliness also scored highly amongst participants. The least-picked strengths included mixed-use development, trails and safety/cleanliness.
The study also identified further areas of research, including parking lot access, green space access and pedestrian safety.
Located along the Montgomery County-Washington D.C. border south of Bethesda, Friendship Heights began as a residential neighborhood in the early 20th century. Since then, the community underwent several changes in its transition from a suburb to a bustling metro area.
