Plaque Dedicated to ‘Hero’ Fatally Shot Trying to Save Metro Passenger

“In honor of his heroism,” Metro mechanic Robert Cunningham, who was killed trying to protect a passenger, was honored Thursday with a memorial plaque.

Metro unveiled a memorial plaque at the Potomac Avenue station, where he was fatally shot. The plaque called Cunningham “a dedicated employee and public servant lost courageously in a selfless act.”

Also written on the plaque, “His commitment to safety and service will always be remembered. May his sacrifice inspire us to uphold the values he stood for.”

“We’ll never forget the courage he showed to save the lives of others,” Metro tweeted.

Cunningham, who was born in Takoma Park and lived in Silver Spring, attempted to subdue a shooter when he was shot Feb. 1, 2023.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, a man later identified as Isaiah Trotman, pointed a handgun at a female and had a verbal exchange. Cunningham attempted to intervene, and the suspect shot him before entering an occupied Metro rail car. There, passengers disarmed him, police said.

Trotman, 32 of Washington, D.C., was indicted Oct. 25, 2023, on 52 charges, including first degree murder while armed, for the fatal shooting rampage that killed Cunningham and injured two others.
