Three seven-year-old elementary schoolers were taken to hospitals after they consumed what police say may have been a methamphetamine-related drug like Adderall or MDMA.
Detectives from the Rockville City Police Department and Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) responded to College Gardens Elementary School in Rockville after the three students became sick on Monday, according to a release from MCPD.
According to police, a group of students found a container of blue items they thought were candy. Three students briefly ingested the items and spit them out. The three children went to the school nurse when they started to feel dizzy, and the nurse called emergency medical services. The children were taken to hospitals as a precaution, police said.
All three were discharged from the hospital and are home.
None of the items consumed were recovered, according to police. Detectives are not certain what exactly was ingested, but investigators think it may have been a methamphetamine-related drug like Adderall or MDMA — also called ecstasy or Molly — based on toxicology of some victims.
In a written statement, MCPD Chief Marcus Jones said, “I am relieved that the students will ultimately be fine, but in many ways, what happened today is frightening. I hope that it serves as a powerful motivator for parents to keep having the difficult conversations with their children about the dangers of taking or eating unknown substances.”
The investigation is ongoing.
