Two brothers were arrested and charged for a stabbing “prank” that involved a kitchen knife, camera, unsuspecting witnesses and a “large amount of blood,” the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) said.
Denidson Jean, 21, and Pierre Jean, 19, are each charged with knowingly making a false alarm call and with making a false statement to a law enforcement officer, according to online case records. In a statement, Police Chief Marcus Jones said the incident showed a “total disregard” for county police, fire/rescue personnel and residents.
On Jan. 24, officers were dispatched to a home on Laurie Drive in Silver Spring for the report of a stabbing, a police statement said. A caller told 911 that two brothers were fighting inside the home and it looked like one stabbed the other in the neck with a knife, MCPD said. Police said the first arriving officer saw Denidson Jean lying on the kitchen floor covered in a “large amount of blood” and holding a shirt to his neck; the officer thought he was using the shirt to stop his bleeding. MCPD said the officer saw Pierre Jean standing over his brother, also covered in blood. When the officer asked Pierre who stabbed Denidson, police said Pierre responded, “I didn’t mean to.” The officer also saw a large kitchen knife covered in blood, police said, and four other residents were yelling and crying in the home, “which contributed to the chaotic scene.”
The officer administered first aid to Denidson and radioed for an advanced life support response from fire and rescue services, said the police statement.
After two minutes of the officer being in the home and applying aid, police said Denidson sat up and started laughing. Denidson told the officer the incident was a prank for social media and as additional officers arrived, MCPD said Denidson was determined to be uninjured.
MCPD found that the brothers faked the stabbing for social media. Police said there was fake blood in the home and that a digital camera was in the kitchen light. The brothers set the bloody scene and faked a physical fight, MCPD said, and Pierre told the other residents of the home to call the police five times. Police say they have no indication that other residents knew the incident was faked. The two were arrested Feb. 8 and were released from custody, MCPD said.
Chief Jones said officers and medical personnel had to respond to the incident in emergency status, using vehicle overhead lights and sirens, which caused “unnecessary risk to the emergency responders and the community,” Jones said.
“The suspects created a dangerous and chaotic scene for the officers and other residents in the home, and we are fortunate that no one was hurt or injured during this situation,” he said.
“These suspects also showed a total disregard for Montgomery County residents, who may have needed those emergency services that were unnecessarily devoted and possibly diverted from other calls for service to this hoax.” Jones said officers still had to interview witnesses and document the incident even though it was faked. He said he is proud of Montgomery County police officers, who he said showed “tremendous professionalism throughout the entire incident.”
