Police said they have increased presence around religious institutions in the county for the safety of the Jewish community.
“In response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Montgomery County Police Department has taken steps to enhance the safety of our Jewish community,” the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) shared in a statement Thursday.
“We have increased police presence around religious institutions located within the county.”
There are currently no known threats in the county, according to MCPD.
County Executive Marc Elrich also said Wednesday that no organization has mentioned a specific threat, but said that people are concerned that past incidents in the Middle East triggered increased hate violence, “and I think there is an uncomfortable anticipation that we could be visited with this again.” Elrich announced that the county opened applications for its security grant program for faith organizations and nonprofits.
The police department is actively monitoring the situation, according to MCPD.
