Montgomery County Police (MCPD) arrested and charged a man on Tuesday for an armed carjacking and a subsequent string of robberies.
Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Sean Charles Wright IV, a Potomac resident. Wright IV has been charged with armed carjacking and two counts of armed robbery.
According to a press release about the Tuesday morning crime spree, MCPD officers first responded to an 8:02 a.m. call from the 7100 block of Democracy Blvd. for a report of an armed carjacking.
Police say that a preliminary investigation into the incident determined that a man wearing a black Scarface t-shirt approached the victim, who was in his minivan, and climbed into the passenger seat. According to police, the suspect then allegedly lifted his shirt, “implying he had a handgun,” and “demanded the victim get out of his vehicle and leave the keys.”
The driver complied, and the suspect fled the scene in the car.
Just over an hour later, at 9:18 a.m., police responded to another call, this one for an armed robbery in the 100 block of Rollins Ave.
According to police, investigation revealed that a man, later identified as Wright IV, entered a store, went behind the counter and “demanded that the employee open the cash register.” When the employee refused, police say the man grabbed cash that was on the counter and fled the scene.
Roughly seven minutes later, at 9:25 a.m., a police officer on a separate call for service observed a man matching the description of the carjacking suspect running from a 7-Eleven in the 11500 block of Rockville Pike.
When the officer noticed the man, identified as Wright IV, get into the stolen minivan, he approached the vehicle and instructed the man to exit. The suspect got out of the minivan and attempted to run away, but the officer apprehended him after a “brief foot pursuit.”
According to police, the suspect had also allegedly robbed the 7-Eleven that the officer had seen him exiting. Police say that further investigation revealed that he had entered the store, “reached over the counter [and] assaulted an employee” and demanded the employee turn over cash from the register.
After his arrest, police transported Wright IV to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. His preliminary hearing will take place July 5.
