Bill Tompkins, president and CEO of the county’s Economic Development Corporation, will step down at the end of his term in August.
He held the role since August 2022, according to the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC).
“I am immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our board members, staff, partners, and the community for their support and collaboration throughout my time here,” Tompkins said in a written statement. “As I prepare for this change, I remain dedicated to ensuring a seamless handover and continued success for the organization.”
The organization’s board of directors started a search for a new leader and a transition committee has been created, per a release. Tompkins will continue to lead while a successor is found.
During this time, the board and organization leadership will work with the state and stakeholders to clarify MCEDC’s role — “The focus will be on retaining and attracting employers while promoting the attractiveness of our business community,” according to the release.
The change comes at an “inflection point” for the organization and MCEDC is “refocusing on building on Montgomery County’s fundamental advantages including a skilled workforce, tax competitiveness, and location in the National Capital Region.”
In a statement, the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) thanked Tompkins for his collaboration and partnership.
“We believe wholeheartedly in the mission of MCEDC and the impact it will continue to have on the economic strength and vitality of the County. MCCC pledges to continue to support MCEDC and its team and looks forward to continuing the collaboration once a new head has been named. We wish Bill all the best in his future endeavors.”
