The Montgomery County Recreation Department is collecting donations of new or used prom attire for its third annual “Project Prom Dress” event. It gives high schoolers the chance to go to the spring dance without having to play for what can be an expensive evening.
Starting this week through Feb. 29, community members can donate gently used and new dresses, suits and accessories at the Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville. Montgomery County Recreation will also host special collection dates on March 2 and March 9 in Chevy Chase and Germantown, respectively.
After collection, items will be dry cleaned and set up at a boutique in the Praisner Recreation center. On Saturday, April 13, a student ID will get high schoolers inside to select their outfits. Last year’s event saw a turnout of more than 160 students.
County Executive Marc Elrich said in a statement that “Project Prom Dress” will help ensure everyone can participate in prom by reducing the financial barrier of costly dresses, suits and accessories.
“Celebrating prom is a ‘rite of passage’ for many students, unfortunately the high cost of prom apparel and accessories prohibit many students from participating,” Elrich added. “Every student deserves the right to attend their prom.”
