The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration is holding a virtual preconstruction meeting Thursday night on its plan to build a shared streets pilot project on University Boulevard in Wheaton between Amherst and Arcola avenues.
The May 13 virtual hearing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on MS Teams. Residents are invited to speak.
The project is temporary with the possibility of making it permanent in the future. It would create one travel lane in each direction for bicyclists. Work is expected to begin soon with the new traffic patterns in effect through the fall.
The pilot project will reduce the number of vehicles from three lanes down to two on both east and west bound University Boulevard, which is also known as MD 193. The lanes closest to the curb will be used for bicyclists. Vertical delineators, which are flexible posts, will separate vehicle and bike lanes. Also, signs and road striping will be added.
