Purple Line Transit Partners, the private sector partner with Maryland on the Purple Line, awarded six community organizations to receive Beyond the Rail Grants.
Those receiving grants are:
Outdoor Classroom – Sligo Creek Education Foundation, Silver Spring (Silver Spring International Middle School and Sligo Creek Elementary School);
IW Food Pantry – Interfaith Works, Inc., Rockville (serving all of Montgomery County);
Purple Line Power Hours – Nonprofit Montgomery, Rockville (serving all of Montgomery County);
Building a Just and Verdant Montgomery County Together – One Montgomery Green, Silver Spring (serving all of Montgomery County);
Travel Training for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities – SEEC, Silver Spring (serving all of Montgomery County);
National Night Out – Beacon Heights Citizens Association, Beacon Heights
Beyond the Rails community grants are valued at between $1,000 and $3,000 and groups performing good works in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties are invited to apply.
“We’re excited to provide financial backing to these six organizations, which work tirelessly to make our local communities better places to live, work and play,” said Doran Bosso, PLTP Chief Executive Officer. “The number and quality of applications we received was truly inspirational and selecting the awardees was not an easy task.”
Six more organizations will be awarded grants. Applications are due by Nov. 30.
Successful applications support community organizations and/or neighborhoods (as opposed to individuals or businesses); provide benefits to a community adjacent to the Purple Line corridor; and must be related to community and the environment.
When it opens, the Purple Line will connect with five branches of Metrorail, three MARC commuter rail lines, Amtrak and a host of bus services. There will be 21 stations, linking Bethesda and Silver Spring to College Park and New Carrollton.
