Singer/songwriter and Potomac native Maggie Rose was nominated for her first Grammy award for No One Gets Out Alive in the Best Americana Album category.
The Nashville resident will be at the awards ceremony Sunday. MCM caught up with her before she departed for Los Angeles.
Describe how you are feeling right now knowing you have a chance to win your first Grammy.
Just being acknowledged by my peers in the industry with this nomination is such an honor and the Grammys are unique in a sense that you truly are reviewed by fellow music makers, so having the backing of a huge major label or machine behind you doesn’t have the same sway that it might with other awards. And, being recognized for the whole album in that category gave such renewing energy to the music taking it to places I couldn’t imagine.
What would winning mean to you?
I have been in Nashville for 17 years working continuously, but I feel like I have earned the right to make the music I make and that’s not going away. However, there is no denying that winning a Grammy can transform people’s perception of your success and maybe it will make some people who have been sleeping on my music take a listen. Win or lose, I am lucky to do the work I love.
You and your husband and manager Austin Marshall are expecting your your first child this year. How does being pregnant change the experience for you?
It puts everything in perspective. The highs and lows of this year have been balanced out by this larger life event that I am so excited about. This music is about life, gratitude, moving forward with big plans and closing chapters we are ready to leave behind, so the idea of welcoming our first child in the midst of celebrating this album feels really poetic.
In the title track from the No One Gets Out Alive album, one of the lyrics is “wear the dress that stops the show.” Do you have one for Sunday?
This talented designer Sheila Frank is designing the ultimate Grammy dress for the moment and she, along with Sarah Nearis (stylist), dreamt up something ethereal and sparkly to pair with the moment.
Do you have and superstitions or lucky charms?
A good night’s sleep.
