Tuesday, the County Council looks to pass a bill establishing rent controls. Nearly 40% of the county’s residents call rental properties home. This bill promises to impact a problem the county has long struggled to solve – affordable housing. But it has also galvanized opinions. To help our readers understand the issues MCM presents two local officials — Gaithersburg mayor Jud Ashman and Renters Alliance Executive Director Matt Losak — with opposing points of view.
Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. Councilmembers Will Jawando and Kristin Mink will hold a press conference about the Council’s actions on rent stabilization and anti-rent gouging protections. Together Jawando and Mink put forward an alternative bill capping rent increases at 3%, significantly less than the 6% cap in the bill currently being considered. Housing advocates will join the press conference at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville.
