Repeated Hate Vandalism a ‘Serious Problem,’ Elrich Says After Graffiti Found at 4 Schools

County Executive Marc Elrich spoke on multiple instances of “deeply disturbing” hate vandalism discovered at schools Monday.

The vandalism was found at four schools: Churchill High School in Potomac, Wootton High School in Rockville, Strathmore Elementary School in Silver Spring, and Fallsmead Elementary School in Rockville.

It included antisemitic iconography including swastikas and anti-LGBTQ+ language, according to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Recently, there was antisemitic graffiti also found at Bethesda Elementary School.

“One incident might be shocking, but the repetition of these acts is a serious problem,” Elrich said during a media briefing Tuesday.

He said “the goal is simply to divide our community” and “turn neighbor against neighbor.”

MCPS reported the vandalism to the police Monday morning. Elrich said security and police patrols will be stepped up as necessary.

“Trust us, we will prosecute people who do this,” Elrich said. He said all hate incidents and graffiti should be reported to 301-279-8000.
