Republicans Mount a Petition to Control County Spending

Fresh off their victory to impose term limits on County Executive eligibility last fall, the Montgomery County GOP (MCGOP) will mount another petition next month.  This time the group will target the increasing taxation of residents for everything from garbage collection to property taxes.

Called “Control MoCo Spending” the petition seeks to limit the county spending to the Consumer Price Index for the prior year. In the words of the press release, “The County Executive and the County Council have a long history of lavish spending….”

The petition asserts Montgomery County outpaces other nearby jurisdictions when it comes to raising taxes in all forms. It also points out that residents face a season of rising taxes for the second year in a row.

In a statement sent to MCM MCGOP Chairman Reardon Sullivan also challenges where the funds raised for education get spent.

“If the County Executive and County Council were really serious about additional funding for schools, they would implement a ‘lockbox’ that would ensure that money raised for schools is actually used for schools and not swept into the general fund.”

The party hopes to gather at least 10 thousand signatures to put this question on the ballot for the 2028 election.
