The University Boulevard Corridor Plan (UBCP) focuses on a three mile stretch of MD 193 between I-495 and Wheaton. The Planning Commission published its first draft in January. The plan looks to address community needs like traffic safety, corridor growth, and economic development. Proposals include new transit-oriented housing, bike lanes and bus rapid transit.
On Thursday, Feb. 27, the Planning Commission held a public hearing. And while many liked the plan’s goals, few were enthusiastic about its outcomes. 72 local residents testified in person or virtually at the meeting. Citing some familiar themes in their hours of testimony, neighbors talked about added traffic congestion, increased flow of cars through their side streets and fears of lowering property values.
Here’s what some of the corridor residents had to say.
Supporters of the Planning Commission’s 500 plus page draft were few in number. The Commission will continue to review the issues presented in upcoming work sessions. Changes will be made to the current version before it is sent to the County Council for approval. The timetable for any actual changes to the corridor depends on the approval process and funding for the project.
The Commission has scheduled more than 20 in person and virtual meetings since the UBCP was introduced. A video outlining the objectives of the UBCP can be found here.
