UPDATED Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Although Bethesda’s Isaac Applebaum was the highest scorer in his semi final round, his score turned out to be the lowest of the four Jeopardy! National College Championship’s students to win their semifinal heat. Therefore, the Richard Montgomery High School graduate will not compete in Tuesday’s final round.
However, he has been invited back for the postseason Second Chance Tournament. The winner there will compete in the Tournament of Champions.

Isaac Applebaum, a Richard Montgomery High School graduate, had a great Thursday night. Although he went into Final Jeopardy in second place, he was the only one of three contestants to respond correctly.
The Stanford University junior pumped his fist in the air after realizing he made it to the finals in the Jeopardy! National College Championship, which will air on ABC7 Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m.
Applebaum was ahead at the end of the first round, but was $1,800 behind first place at the end of the Double Jeopardy round. However, the computational biology major answered Final Jeopardy correctly in the category of Words from Mythology.
The answer was – “A 1525 textbook on anatomy says this, being ‘so different of colours’, could also be called ‘rain bows.” Unlike his challengers from Louisiana State University and Pamona College in California, Applebaum knew the correct question was “What are irises?”
During a brief introduction by host Mayim Bailik, Applebaum spoke about how much he enjoys working in two labs at Stanford on machine learning and polymers, which are involved in the delivery of the mRNA vaccine for COVID-19.
If successful in the finals, Applebaum would walk away with $250,000 and the title of Jeopardy! National College Champion.
