Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) is giving away steering wheel locks on Saturday, May 4.
Locks will be given out from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or until supplies last. Make sure to bring vehicle registration and proof of Rockville residency.
There will be a limited number of steering wheel locks. This a drive-up event. Attendees must enter the RCPD station parking lot from West Montgomery Avenue and exit on to South Washington Street.
The locks work by preventing anyone who does not have the designated key from turning the wheel making it impossible to navigate the vehicle without removing it first. While it does not completely prevent vehicle theft, it does act as a deterrent and additional protection.
This is the second giveaway this year by the RCPD. It is part of a response to the rise in vehicle theft in the city. According to a press release by the city of Rockville, the city has seen a 68% increase in vehicle thefts from 2022 to 2023.
