The Rockville City Police Department (RCPD), in partnership with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, will host a gun buyback event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 at RedGate Park, 14500 Avery Road in Rockville. This event provides community members with a safe, anonymous way to dispose of unwanted firearms.
Participants can drive up and drop off firearms without showing identification or answering questions. They must stay in their vehicles at all times, keep firearms unloaded, and transport them in the trunk. They must ensure no ammunition is in the guns, and organizers will not permit walk-ups. The program provides a $100 Visa gift card for each functioning handgun, rifle, or shotgun. It offers $200 in Visa gift cards for each functioning assault-style weapon or privately manufactured firearm, also known as ghost guns. Organizers will accept non-functioning firearms and ammunition but will not offer compensation for them. The Rockville City Police Department will limit gift card quantities and decide which firearms qualify for compensation. Organizers reserve the right to limit the number of gift cards an individual receives, regardless of the number of weapons surrendered.
Two previous buyback events in Rockville have been highly successful, with about 300 firearms turned in at each event. The program aims to remove guns that could potentially be used in serious crimes, suicides, domestic violence incidents, or accidental discharges by children.
They will hold the event rain or shine. Visit the city of Rockville’s website for answers to frequently asked questions.
