‘Golden Bachelor’ Takes Dramatic Turn for Rockville Resident Joan

Warning: This story contains spoilers from the third episode of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor.

During the third episode of ABC’s hit reality show The Golden Bachelor, Rockville resident Joan Vassos appeared headed for a serious love connection. But a real-life twist changed everything.

The episode, which aired Thursday night, began with 12 contestants and a talent show.

Despite confessing “I don’t have any talents. I’m not an actress, singer, dancer or performer,’ Vassos, a school administrator in Montgomery County, won the talent show — or at least won over Golden Bachelor Gary Turner — with a rhyming poem called “I hope I don’t vomit on your shoes.”

Turner, 71, offered Vassos, 60, a rose which she gladly accepted. Turner, who wears a hearing aid, and Vassos went to dinner which included a toast, another rose and at least two romantic kisses. Both Turner and Vassos are widowed.

Things looked to be moving fast until Vassos received a text from her daughter who had had a difficult pregnancy and asked her mom to come home. “You need your mom. Nothing is more important.” Vassos said in tears. “I have to go and be a mom.”

Vassos broke the news to a disappointed but understanding Turner.”Thank you for being the best person ever,” Vassos told him.

Turner, who sat alone on a bench crying, said, “She’s doing the right thing. It’s time to move on.”
