Rodeo Photo From Ag Fair Recognized at International Competition

“Just Another American Saturday Night,” a photo depicting a professional bull rider at the rodeo at Montgomery County Agricultural Fair in Gaithersburg, was recognized at the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) International Photo Competition in Dallas recently.

The photo, taken by MCM veteran freelance photographer Phil Fabrizio last August 10, ranked 5th in the Sports Category. The photo took home Gold. Platinum and Diamond are the highest awards. There were 16 national categories and nearly 4,000 total images entered.

“I began the evening with a new camera and long lens in hand. The evening golden hour was approaching, and I switched to the opposite side of the ring to catch the cowboys and bulls coming out of the shoot” Fabrizio told MCM. “It was there that I saw the set-up of the Great American Midway Rides in the background of the Rodeo pen.Perfect! “I found my image at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning as I obsessed with digging through all 9,000 till, I found just the right one,” Fabrizio said. The photo may be featured on the side of a RideOn bus Fabrizio said.

“Phil is a superb photo journalist who is passionate about his craft. We are thrilled for him but not surprised that his work has been recognized,’ said MCM News Director Joe Yasharoff. “Congratulations from all his colleagues at MCM.”

MCM asked Fabrizio how many rodeos he had covered previously. He said none. This was literally his first rodeo.
