Montgomery County police and partner agencies stopped 271 drivers Wednesday during a traffic enforcement operation on Route 29. Officers focused on violations of Maryland’s Move Over Law and speeding.
Police from Montgomery County, Howard County, Maryland State Police, and Maryland Transportation Authority Police conducted the operation from the D.C. line to Interstate 70 in Howard County.
Officers cited 90 drivers for failing to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and 94 for speeding. They issued 237 warnings and 10 safety equipment repair orders. A Montgomery County motors officer ticketed a BMW driver for traveling 102 mph in a 60 mph zone.
Commercial vehicle inspectors conducted seven inspections, finding 28 violations. They placed three vehicles and one driver out of service.
Maryland law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching vehicles displaying warning signals, including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and tow trucks. Violators can face fines and points on their driving records.
