The upcoming Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) year begins Aug. 26, 2024 and ends June 13, 2025.
Tuesday, Board of Education members voted unanimously to adopt the new school year calendar that includes 182 instructional days.
Winter break begins Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024 and ends Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025. Spring break begins Saturday, April 12, 2025 and ends Monday, April 21, 2025.
The calendar includes days off for Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, the Friday before and Monday after Easter and Memorial Day.
The five early release days are Sept. 27, Feb. 28, Nov. 25, Nov. 27 and June 13.
Oct. 3, which is Rosh Hashanah, is a stand-alone non instructional day. There will be no school for teachers and students.
March 31, which is Eid al-Fitr, is a grading and planning day and is considered a possible make up day. June 6, 2025, Eid al-Adha. is a professional development stand-alone day. Students will be off.
MCPS officials reached out to as many groups for calendar input. Some administrators and school board members went to specialized markets for input.
MCPS learned that 69% of respondents wanted school to start before Labor Day.
Many students had urged MCPS to close schools the day after Halloween, but that suggestion was not adopted.
Schools following an innovative calendar with year-round instruction will begin July 8, 2024 and end June 13, 2025.
