The school board released a less-redacted version of a report investigating the promotion of a former principal who had numerous sexual harassment complaints against him.
“I certainly would’ve liked it a lot sooner,” Council President Andrew Friedson told MCM on Thursday.
“The recent letter that I sent was only the latest in months and months of urging, including from this dais all the way back in September,” he said.
The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Board of Education hired the law firm Jackson Lewis to conduct an investigation on former principal Dr. Joel Beidleman’s promotion. The school board released a redacted version in October and, following calls for more transparency, released a less-redacted version Thursday, shortly before a council meeting with school officials and the county Inspector General.
In a written statement, the school board said, “Today’s release aims to reassure the community that the Board of Education is committed to transparency, openness and accountability while we begin to heal our community and re-focus on the work of learning and teaching.” The report still has redactions to protect identity of staff, per the statement.
Councilmembers scheduled Thursday’s meeting related to a separate report from the county Inspector General related to how MCPS handles employee misconduct complaints.
