The long-awaited Silver Line extension is scheduled to open Nov. 15, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced Monday.
The extension adds six new stops through northern Virginia, including a station at Washington Dulles International Airport. The Washington Dulles International Airport station is accessible through an underground tunnel and is a short walk from the airport’s baggage claim, according to a WMATA press release.
The extension continues the Silver Line from the Wiehle-Reston East station through the new Ashburn station. The names of the new stations are:
- Reston Town Center
- Herndon
- Innovation Center
- Washington Dulles International Airport
- Loudoun Gateway
- Ashburn
The opening of these six new stations marks the completion of the second phase of the Silver Line expansion project. The first phase of the project was completed in 2014.
The Silver Line expansion project is the largest expansion of the Metrorail system in its history. The new extension is over 11 miles long, and in total, the expansion project is over 23 miles long.
WMATA announced the opening date on Oct. 31 through a press release and a promotional video.
