As the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) sets its sights on governmental infrastructure, an agency based in the county seems to be in its crosshairs.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was established in 1970 by then President Richard Nixon. Among its missions: collecting weather data, protecting marine and coastal ecosystems and predicting changes in the environment.
Now reportedly NOAA may be headed for privatization with Elon Musk saying he will cut the staff by 50%.
Senator Chris Van Hollen spoke to a crowd gathered at the Department of Commerce about NOAA’s future on Tuesday.
NOAA employs approximately 1,000 people in the D.C. area. Worldwide that expands to 12,000 professionals including scientists, engineers and technicians.
