Police said a Silver Spring man died in an ATV collision on Friday.
52-year-old Paul Benedict Herbert was pronounced dead at the scene, per a release from the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD). At about 5:14 p.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of Briggs Chaney Road for a reported single vehicle collision on private property. Police said Herbert was in a collision while on an ATV and sustained life-threatening injuries.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will conduct an autopsy. Investigators have no reason to suspect foul play at this time, police said. This is an ongoing investigation.
Herbert was honored last year by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) for a “life-saving action”, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.
On June 1, 2021, Herbert came to the aid of a neighbor who was pinned under an RV motor coach. The patient suffered multiple rib fractures, a lacerated spleen and multiple abrasions. Herbert was honored for being an “Everyday Hero.”
“If it wasn’t for you guys I wouldn’t be standing here,” his neighbor said during the awards ceremony in May. He thanked Herbert and MCFRS emergency medical services.
