A Silver Spring man was sentenced to 50 years in prison, with all but 30 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation, for his role in a fatal shooting last year.
Javier Reyes, 23, was convicted in December of second-degree felony murder and use of a handgun in a crime of violence in the death of Walter Woods, 20, of Takoma Park, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The charges stem from a shooting that occurred on March 7, 2023, on Hampshire Green Lane in Silver Spring.
Montgomery County police determined Reyes and Woods had met at a neighborhood park for a drug transaction.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots and found Woods lying unresponsive in the playground area with four gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The sentencing hearing was held before Judge Jill Cummins.
Assistant State’s Attorneys Thea Zumwalt and Jacqueline Taylor prosecuted the case.
